About Pac Rim

Pac Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity

Every year from 1988 through 2017, the Center on Disability Studies (CDS), College of Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa has held the Pac Rim Conference. In 2018 we elected to take a breather, and work through our experiences and feedback on past conferences, hit the refresh button, and launch our next Pac Rim in March 2019.

Over the years, Pac Rim has evolved into an international conference that both shares the disability experience and celebrates diversity and disability in varied contexts. Annually we have had hundreds of presenters and attendees from across Hawaii, the nation and the globe, included book fairs and film festivals, and used large and multiple venues. These past experiences have informed us, cautioned us, and inspired us to offer a Pac Rim 2019 Conference that will allow for:

  • Sharing of practices that will inspire actions that lead to positive change when participants go home
  • Time for networking and creative exchanges before, during, and after presentations and workshops
  • Platforms from which new partnerships will emerge between people with disabilities and their communities, among parents, policymakers, and service providers, between idea generators and professionals, between researchers and trainers, and among Hawaiians, Mainlanders, and international visitors
  • A venue that is fully accessible and enhances the conference experience

The conference topics for Pac Rim 2019 are Education, Employment, Accessibility, and Health and Wellbeing. Within each of these four themes we are especially interested in presentations that address strategies to develop and use interdisciplinary teams effectively, achieve successful transitions, promote healthy social emotional development, and integrate disabilities studies. So, if you have experience or expertise that intersect with the Pac Rim 2019 themes, send us a proposal. Check out our submissions page for more information about the Call for Proposals.

CDS is a center devoted to training, research, evaluation, community service, and dissemination activities that increase the likelihood that Hawaiians with disabilities of all ages lead full, productive, and happy lives. Our commitment extends to our unique, racially and culturally diverse populations that inhabit our eight-island state, over 5,000 miles from the U.S. Mainland.

Whether you are a Pac Rim veteran or a newcomer, CDS is going to make your Pac Rim 2019 experience the best ever. Individuals with disabilities and parents, who are experts in their own right, will meet, share, and benefit from information and expertise from Hawaii, the Mainland, and other countries. Educators will have access to cutting edge ideas that transform learning environments. Professionals and employers will connect in ways that increase jobs for people with disabilities. Advocates who push for greater accessibility will find out how to do it in technical, political, and practical ways. People with interests in good health and wellbeing will leave Pac Rim 2019 energized with practical tools to promote multiple ways to live healthier lives.

Pac Rim 2019 will be very user friendly. We promise:
