Innovation: Meeting Basic and Social Needs

The Pacific Rim team has been committed to those good ideas and practical solutions to ending poverty as it affects negatively to a person’s well-being and causes unnecessary suffering including physical and mental health challenges. This year, we want to focus on ideas and innovations which build inclusive communities and which Meet the Basic Needs of community members. New movements are evolving which focus not on a society based on consumption and competition but one that is characterized by social structures and communities that foster cooperation and community. The market economy is not the yardstick for measuring the wealth and health of human beings. A few presentations that touch on these areas are: Social Support as A Moderator of the Effects of Financial Stress on the Postsecondary Adjustment of College Students with Disabilities; Samantha’s Law; and Literacy & Independent Living Working Together a Basic Need.
