The 21st Century: What is Advocacy? What is it not?

“Advocacy” is diverse. The term encompasses activities from lobbying on Capitol Hill, using social media to spread your message, to even protesting on the street. It can happen in nearly any context, from a court of law, a classroom, to a discussion around a kitchen table. While these diverse forms of advocacy and self-advocacy thrive, some question if the federal and state governments’ advocacy is far-reaching or dynamic enough. The Pacific Rim International Conference on Disability and Diversity is proud to host the first critical discussion on advocacy. We can work together to define advocacy, share best practices, and help reform broken models of advocacy with presentations such as: Advocacy Through Community Forums; Personal Stories of Creation: The Advocate’s Avenue to Wellness; and Advocacy in the 21st Century: Agents Within Local Government.
