Connecting the DOT’S!

The workshop will provide an overview of the web based national training curriculum that is being used in over 30 states to support a profession of direct care. Based on the Community Supports Skills Standards, the College of Direct Support is the cornerstone of a national training and mentoring movement for developing a profession of direct care in America. With over 1,000,000 completed lessons, the CDS is seen as the Gold Standard for Direct Support Workers professional development. By using contemporary technology and skills demonstration, the CDS provides a career ladder for our industry.

The College of Direct Support is a collaborative effort of The University of Minnesota, Center on Community Integration, MC Strategies/Elsevier and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. The session will encompass a power point overview of the development of the program as well as an on line demonstration and a lively question and answer period.

Presenter Bios

Bill Tapp

Bill Tapp serves as the National Director for the College of Direct Support. It was through his nine-year tenure as the Director of Development for Sertoma Center that he saw the need to create a training methodology for Direct Care Professionals. Sertoma Center, a Knoxville service provider, was founded in 1960 and serves 150 adults with developmental disabilities. Bill and his wife are proud parents of two adult sons.

Bill has been involved in the development of the College of Direct Support since its inception. Bill holds a master’s degree in Educational Guidance and Counseling. A native of East Tennessee, Bill currently serves on the boards of Non Profit Risk Management Board, Kids on the Block and is President of the ANCOR Foundation Trustees.
