Do you want to deepen your understanding of the what, why and hows of Cooperative Teaching? We will take you via active learning, presentations, and panel discussions of successful Cooperative Teaching efforts in Hawai‘i DOE schools.

Norma Jean Stodden is an Assistant Professor at the Center on Disability Studies, University of Hawaii at Manoa. As Interdisciplinary Training Coordinator, she manages the graduate level Certificate in Disability and Diversity Studies program. Her current s cholarly focus is on accessing the general education curriculum for students with disabilities and culturally responsive teaching and learning. She has directed two USDOE teacher training programs designed to provide general and special education teachers with the knowledge, skills, research- based instructional strategies, and practices needed to teach students with diverse learning needs in inclusive classrooms. She has also directed two Native Hawaiian Curriculum Development grants entitled Kūkulu Nā Uapo, a 6th grade culturally responsive, standards-based physical science curriculum (www.kukulu.hawaii.edu), and Ka‘imi loa o ka hihi, a project to design standards- based, culturally connected, Math and Science WebQuests for grades 4-7 both in partnership with ALU LIKE, Inc.

Jeanne Bauwens’ work in the field of education has spanned for more than 30 years. She has taught at both the elementary, secondary, and university level. Jeanne has written books and numerous articles about Cooperative Teaching, differentiating instruction, and evidence-based instructional strategies. In addition, she has worked with state department personnel, district and school level administrators, and teachers k-12 throughout the US mainland, has taught classes in American Samoa and Saipan, and has provided professional development opportunities to educators in both Canada and Australia. Currently Dr. Bauwens, is a professor in the College of Education, University of Hawaii—Center on Disability studies. She works contractually with PREL and WestED (educational laboratories), as well as the Hawaii Department of Education, and schools throughout the islands. Throughout her career, Jeanne’s mantra has been “whatever it takes” is what we must do to effectively teach all learners. This ‘can do’ attitude has fared well for Jeanne as she models high expectations for all learners, both children and adults alike.
