Hidden Disabilities (Hidden From Sight)
The Pacific Rim Conference program on Hidden Disability seeks proposals from persons interested in presenting stories or information that will further discussions regarding the issues facing adults with hidden disabilities. Hidden Disabilities include: learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), psychiatric disabilities, chronic health problems, environmental and other such disabilities that cannot be “seen.” Despite protection under Federal disability law and growing awareness, the needs of people with disabilities that cannot be “seen” are often ignored, overlooked and misunderstood. Hidden disabilities profoundly affect many aspects of a person’s learning, interactions with others, employment, and every day major life activities. The topic leaders are particularly interested in presentations that focus on personal success stories/role model advice, disclosure concerns, support systems, system change, policy issues, self-advocacy guidance and self-awareness, successful trainings and projects related to the afore mentioned subject areas. This topic area will feature noted speakers, breakout sessions, panel discussions, and poster display/presentations.
