Dr. Michael “Mike” Mayer is the Executive Director of The Institute on Complex Disabilities, where he organizes and provides program design, development and management supports, general consultation, and quality improvement services to contracting organizations, in addition to providing training, distance learning services, and research & development services. The Institute supports and promotes research and education related to people who have complex service and support needs and supports an international network of professionals to achieve these goals
He also holds the position of Vice President of Education and Community Relations for RHA Health Services where he facilitates local and national strategic alliances as well as, researching, analyzing, developing, and initiating/supporting “values and evidence based services”.
A major focus for Mike is to facilitate organizational implementation of systems transformation, including service conversions efforts, through numerous channels, including active participation with the state legislatures, the Department of Health and Human Services, state departments, collaborative groups, the courts, and legal representatives.
Mike is an internationally known speaker, trainer, and consultant, having worked with over 400 local, state, and national agencies and organizations and having trained over 40,000 personnel in the U.S., Canada, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim, Africa, Asia, and Europe. He has been directly responsible for overseeing the development of community residential, vocational and other support and treatment services for over 500 people who have disabilities, specializing in individuals with more severe and/or complex disabilities and has overseen and/or consulted on the development, modification to, and/or conversion of family and community services and supports for over 5,250 people. Mike is also known for developing and implementing competency based training systems and facilitating enhanced levels of participation with individuals who have disabilities, their friends and family members.
He has authored and edited over 50 publications including books, chapters, and articles and is a noted developer of numerous assessment tools and protocols used throughout the world to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and support planning, and service evaluation for people who have complex disabilities. As an internationally recognized leader in the field, Mike has served on the faculty of numerous colleges, universities, institutes, international forums, and boards of directors. He currently serves as the Executive Policy Management Chair of the Community Support Providers Council following six terms as president.
His leadership, innovations, and products have resulted in recognition from numerous rights, advocacy, public policy, and professional associations. He completed his undergraduate work in Communication and Special Education at the University of Toledo. He earned his Educational Specialist degree in both Learning and Severe Disabilities from California Lutheran University. He completed post-graduate work at the Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis and he received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology from Ashland University.
He currently resides in Mebane, NC with his wife and three children.
