Participant Outcomes:
As a result of this institute participants will be able to:
- Discuss the primary eligibility criteria used to identify children who have any type of autism spectrum disorder,
- Understand the importance of identifying diagnostic criteria and how those features directly relate to intervention efforts,
- Articulate a number of possible factors that may impact on the dramatic increase in ASD prevalence,
- Describe key factors associated with the learning styles of children with ASD,
- Plan a number of flexible learning arrangements that address the individual needs of children who have ASD,
- Understand the sequence of planning routines and tasks for children,
- Discuss ways to assure that skills will be generalized to various settings (i.e., home and school),
- Help families evaluate the cost/benefit ratio for intervention efforts and state the prevailing legal position for teachers in selecting criteria.
Training Format: Participants will be engaged in discussion via handouts, overheads, video clips and worksheets. Role-playing and hands-on activities will also be utilized to reinforce learning. Bibliographic references and valid websites will also be provided.
