Technologies & Disabilities

Assistive Technology (AT) is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the-shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities (The Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988). AT can enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities including aiding in their independence.

The definition of AT is broad and can include devices that improve functional capabilities associated with employment, education, daily activities, and or recreation. Call for papers should be research based with the intent to address AT use in these various settings. The purpose of presentations should be aligned with at least one of the following three objectives: Inform individuals who are not familiar with AT, increase knowledge of those who are familiar with AT, and provide a platform for discussion around AT issues that may include: AT access; AT funding; and direct application of AT hardware and software.
