Just Schools: Pursuing Equality
in Societies of Difference

Wednesday, February 20, 5:30-6:45 PM, Classroom 2
William S. Richardson School of Law, 2515 Dole Street
Martha Minow is the Jeremiah Smith Jr. Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She is the co-editor (with Richard A. Shweder and Hazel Rose Markus) of a forthcoming collection of essays entitled: Just Schools: Pursuing Equality in Societies of Difference (to be published by the Russell Sage Foundation in April 2008).

The book demonstrates how educators and policymakers can share the goal of equal opportunity in schools while holding very different views on what is required to create a “just school” in multicultural America. While some emphasize the importance of integration and equal treatment for all, others argue for different ways of fostering equal opportunity, while also honoring diversity. Just Schools provides a provocative look at our efforts to define and promote justice, not only in educational institutions but in society at large. Professor Minow will speak on the findings of this project for approximately 45 minutes and then engage in a discussion with the audience.

All are welcome. There will be a light reception before the talk.
